Evita is in the house...

We have a new permanent resident in the house. She belongs here (lived here long before we did) and I think she's quite beautiful! When we first looked at the house with our realtor, I noticed this beautiful lady hanging over the bed in the master bedroom. I had commented to the owner that I thought she was quite beautiful so...when Irma (the woman who loved this house before us) came to pick up her mail the other day, she said that she'd like us to have her. (Her husband had given it to her 40 years ago and she said now we should have it for 40 years.) We've just given her pride of place in the front entrance. What do you think? It's a mass produced copy of the original and the artists' name is Jose Puyet. Can't seem to find out much else about her but will keep trying.

Thanks! I just found this..."Jose Puyet painted the female like no other person...he painted the spirit, essence and soul of the women, whether it is the gypsy, the flirt, or the dreamer. His style is unlike most other painters, and his ability to express the character of his subjects is like no other. Turner Wall Accessories (that's what ours says) had replicated many of his works --two of the more popular being "Lady of Castile" as well as "La coqueta"."

I love it. And I love the story that goes along with it. I think it's perfect, and she belongs there for sure.

Enjoy your roommate! :-)

I have been looking HIGH AND LOW for this picture online. I have the SAME ONE that was given to me as well and every time I look at it I just want to know some history on this painting!! So far, this link is the closest thing I can find to confirm that it is indeed the right portrait! Now, its on to finding out the whole story behind it. Thanks!

I just bought this painting at a thrift store about 20 minutes ago. I had to jump online right away to find out more about her and/or the artist but I can't find much either. If you come across anything new, please share!

I grew up with this painting in our living. When I was younger she gave me the creeps as she seemed to stare at me every time I walked through the room. She is now gracing our home and I love it!

GBabb
I saw the Evita Puyet portrait at a co-workers house 7 years ago and fell in love with it. Just the other day she walked into my office and gave me the portrait, amazing! I love the sexiness about her and the look in her beautiful eyes. I will continue to find out more about her and the painter.

I was also give Evita Puyet several years ago by my mother she hung in a historical Hotel Saloon in Hot Springs SD for several years of the Cascade Hotel & Lounge. A man came in everyday and drank there for many years. One day he came into the bar and offered 350.00 for her knowing it was just a print. Well the owner refused to sell her even though the man pleaded as he had fallen in love with her over the years. Her watching him as he would walk across the room and he would sit there and drink and stare at her. My mother married the owner of the bar and when they closed it down to make a retirement home it hung in my mothers house for about another 10-15 years until one day she gave it to me as a gift because I told her it was the only thing she had that I would like someday. I have had her in my living room for about 5 years now until today. I am planning on moving away to another country and cannot take much of anything with me other than a suitcase Well the only thing that is going from my house is Evita as also per request of my daughter also. Many times people thought it was a painting of me as there was some resemblance when I was younger (now I am 55). Today I had an estate sale and a woman pleaded with me to sell it. NO WAY!!! My mama is gone now since November and every time I see Evita I will be thinking of my mama and the many people that fell in love with her. After the Lady left I took her off the wall and placed her over my bed so she will hang there until she is shipped. I did not realize what she has become to so many people. Several years ago I ran across some information on the painting. Evita is Jose wife and it is the only painting of his wife. I also found a print in a bunch of things someone left at their curb last year of a print of the Granadas But they had trimmed it to fit their frame and cut off part of the bottom and sides.. How sad! Evita will be in our family many more years!!!

I, too, have an Evita painting that I picked up for $10 at my mom's friend's yardsale years ago. I was immediately drawn to it, and had to have it. When I saw it on the show, I couldn't believe it. I had no idea if the painting was unique or not, but I'd never seen it, so to see it on t.v. was a shock. It's nice to have some background and see how many other people have the painting too.

We just moved again and I have Evita in an art box in the garage for now. I've contemplated getting rid of her because she is a bit freaky to some people who gaze upon her. But I just can't seem to let her go.

I also have one, and my family wants it gone. I however, love it.. Sadly, I am forced to sell mine. I live in Western NY area, if anyone is interested, please email me, I need to be sure that she goes to a home that will appreciate her for many years to come... (JoannaLyn1974@yahoo.com)

My sister writes to me:My dad has this painting by Jose Puyet in his house. It's called Evita and it's supposed to be the painter's wife. It used to be in our grandma's house, Rod Selva Gerry Selva. You must know of the painter, he was very famous. Dad told me your grandad bought some original paintings from him in Spain. Isn't it so beautiful??

Hello. We have an interesting dilemma surrounding the Evita Puyet painting. It hangs in my brother's house and we've always half joked about it's dark, supernatural powers. Interesting to hear other's comment about her creepy/freaky eyes etc. My brother went to a professional therapist for personal issues, depression etc and they got on the topic of the painting. The therapist focused on this and said that it was sucking his soul's energy, used the term "leech". She said to get it out of the house asap, cover it with a white pillowcase and lay a cross over it. Does anyone have any reaction to the painting in this way? Not joking, looking for answers...

I too own this picture. I first saw her many years ago hanging in a restaurant. Love at first sight. Searched for years upon years for a picture of her. Finally found a man who had her for sale. She now graces my home. I too find people have a mixed reaction to her.

What kind of therapist tells someone that? Your brother needs a new therapist.

That therapist needs to go ASAP. Evita is hanging in my favorite tattoo shop here in Florida. Everyone loves her.

My grandmother had this portrait in her home. My mom bought it at a furniture store for her in the late 70's in South East Michigan.
I even have a couple of photos of this framed picture.

Just so you know, I read a story about this woman years and years ago. She was a mistress to a tavern owner somewhere in Mississippi or Louisiana. She was murdered by the wife and the husband hid her body behind a fireplace wall. That's about all I can remember.

Anonymous said...

She is NOT Madeline (the mistress of Kings Tavern in Mississippi.) That was sadly and erroneously reported about in the National Enquirer. She is Evita Puyet, the wife of the spanish artist that painted it.

Anonymous said...

Oh yes most definitely. Mrs. Evita has that effect for sure. I just experienced meeting her last night. She left me with chills and every hair on my body standing up

Do you have jose puyet- evita for sale?
